glowing green | week of health & fitness

The saying goes that 80% of abs are made in the kitchen. This means that after all the hard workouts if your diet isn’t clean the majority of the time you ain’t gonna see no results! (preach)

In a world of supplements and quick fix powders & shakes, what we really should be packing our body with is superfoods; foods that are nature’s dynamite and pack a large variety of nutrients into a small natural product. E.G. kale.

I love to start my day off with a green smoothie.

I remember the very first one Jay made for me apon getting our Vitamix. The taste was very green. Like eating grass! And a little thick which made swallowing that more difficult but after a few more tries & tweaks it became addictive. You feel healthy drinking it.

So I wanted to share a few of my Instagram photos of my green smoothies and give you some guidance and ideas for making your own.

Note that you don’t have to have a Vitamix to create gorgeous green but you will need to blend the hell out of it to get a good smooth consistency.

People at work do look at me funny when I’m carrying around my ‘to go’ bottle of the green stuff!

My go-to ingredients are:
– coconut water
– kale
– cucumber
– celery
– apple or pear
– flaxseed or chia seed
– water to get consistency as required

But here are some other ideas I found via Pinterest (aaaah Pinterest!).

instaweek | my week instagram

How’s everyone’s Easter break?
I’ve been loving the extra long four day weekend spent at home in a love bubble with Jay and Harley.

The week past was full of cramming work in before the holidays, getting my healthy eating back on track and catching up with family & friends.
The only low is that Jay’s Dad’s cancer is back; in his liver this time around which means intensive chemo starting next week. We’re focusing on sending good thoughts and lots of love his way.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

it’s easy being green

I recently wrote about my new breakfast routine of a green smoothie (and my fancypants new Vitamix).

I am seriously obsessed with the green smoothie revolution; My skin looks great, my insides function like a well oiled machine and it’s a fast way to have brekkie! So I thought I’d share a few combinations if you get the urge to go green.

The simple rules are

  • use a Vitamix (if possible, I know they’re expensive) because it turns everything to the smoothest liquid which is the reason it goes down easy
  • the foundation is anything green & leafy. preferably kale but you can use cavolo nero, spinach, silverbeet or lettuce
  • used unwaxed fruit
  • cut off any citrus peel
I need to buy some flaxseed or chia seed to add into the mix!
blending step 1
step 2; adding the kale & mint
the finished green smoothie
step 3; ready for drinking!
this morning's green smoothie

cucumber

another day, another smoothie

Last week we bought invested in a Vitamix.

We’ve long been dreaming of this kitchen blender beauty; it takes blending to a whole new level and to blend we will!

our Vitamix

Green smoothies (aka kale shake) are an upper to a healthy fit lifestyle; its a fantastic way to kick off your day as your body is getting a jolt of nutrients and it’s amazing for your digestive system! You have this first thing in the morning (although I work out first on an empty tummy and then do the smoothie).

Jay is intent of doing a 2 week daily cleanse following the green smoothie revolution pioneered by Kevin James and brought to light by Jay’s penultimate roll model Joe Rogan. It goes a little something like this:

If you want to give the green smoothie revolution a go, here are some more recipes via the Vitamix database.

This was our first green smoothie this morning

Ingredients: 1 bunch kale, 2 celery stalks, 2 small unwaxed apples, 1 unwaxed pear, 1 carrot, 250ml coconut water.

I think it’s a little too much volume so we’ll halve it tomorrow…

Viva the green revolution!
