Summer in a glass; Fruity 5 Seeds Cider Cup

There’s not much more refreshing than an icy cold, crisp apple cider on a balmy Sydney summer’s eve.

In my little nook of the world, as the city traffic noise starts to wane, the golden glow of dusk streams through my apartment windows, my fave tunes waft over the stereo speakers, and my little shadow Harley the cavoodle excitedly follows my every move, it’s time for a refreshing cocktail. Nothing too complex; just good ingredients, and something with a clean & refreshing taste.

5 Seeds have released a new lower sugar cider, just in time for Aussie summer!

With the same clean, crisp apple taste, 5 Seeds Lower Sugar Cider is just as refreshing and satisfying as their other ciders, but with less sugar.

I’ve got an idea to pimp it up a little; adding vodka as it’s neutral flavour won’t interrupt the apple cider, and some summer fruit to compliment the apple theme and get it looking colourful in mason jars.

Ingredients

  • 5 Seeds Lower Sugar Cider; bottle per person
  • your fave vodka; 30ml per person
  • cubes of ice

summer fruit;

  • ripe mango, thinly sliced
  • plump passionfruit
  • slices of juicy watermelon
  • fat, round strawberries
  • green pear, sliced into wedges
  • white nectarine, sliced
  • crisp apple, sliced thin for the cup and thicker for garnish
  • ribbons of cucumber
  • sprigs of fragrant mint

Method

  • in a mason jar or other glass, place ice, pour vodka, layer fruit then top with the sparkling 5 Seeds Lower Sugar Cider
  • garnish with mint, colourful stirrers threaded with apple & a festive straw
  • serve*

salad in a jar is a beautiful thing! you layer it with all your fave green healthy goodies and put the dressing on the bottom, then come lunchtime you tip it into a bowl and it’s fresh, crunchy & tasty! In other healthy food related news, I’m onto my last day of Whole30, which is super exciting because it means that (1) I actually stuck to the entire program (2) I learnt some great things about my relationship to food and the kinds of food I want to be eating and (3) I can’t wait to have a glass of bubbles tomorrow!!!!

this is a photo I took when we were holidaying in Fiji, but I’m wanderlusting over a tropical holiday and getting all excited about our planned trip to Hawaii next year. It may be a full year away til that trip, but you can never tire looking at tropical beaches & turquoise waters….

hope you’re week was awesome 💋

adventure day

I’m on holidays this week because there comes a point when you just need some downtime off work for no reason other than your own sanity’s sake.

Today Harley & I drove out of the city on an adventure for some ‘earth time’ and here’s what we got up to

The Stanwell Tops Lookout wasn’t busy considering it is a week day. A local hang-glider was waiting for some wind so we chatted while his dog Pup the cavoodle and Harley (the cavoodle) had an impromptu play date! I ate my little picnic overlooking the bluest ocean and lay on the grass breathing in the warm salty air.

We continued on into the National Park where the sun was shining, the spring air was warm and scented by wattle trees. We discovered a little river and spotted two water dragons sunning themselves.

Content with a day out of the hustle & bustle of city life, we started the hour and a half long drive back, Harley with his furry little head eternally hanging out the window and me singing my heart out to Coldplay on the stereo.

| weekend |

It’s been 11 days since I tore 2 ligaments in my ankle.

Today I went outside!!! Into the real world, with real people and real interactions that didn’t involve my physio! Yay! Being inside, with my foot up has seriously been messing with my chi. Today I managed with just one crutch, so I’ll see how that went later this evening with the swelling.

Yesterday, for #flashbackfriday on Instagram I posted this picture of my brother & I with our Dad in 1986. It was during the 2 years we travelled around Australia in our caravan.
I was ‘home schooled’ but basically the ‘school of nature’ was my teacher!
During these 2 years I did an Indigenous Walkabout, I ate snake and other weird foods, I went on a crocodile hunt, rode camels in the desert, caught game fish all up the western Australian coast, learnt how to cook what we caught or hunted, met a myriad of people from all walks of life and had the most amazing experiences that I still think back on today.

Looking back, it was probably the best thing my parents ever did for me.

I also received some Instagram prints in the mail from Social PS. These are going on my fridge!

Then to the park to give Harley a run with the frisbee. Jay’s been teaching him to catch it on the fly; he’s doing so well! He caught 5 in mid-air today!IMG_20130831_133203

The Sydney weather has been perfection. Today, the official last day of winter, was mid-20°Cs, sun shining and just beautiful. We got home about mid-afternoon and spent some quality time on the balcony in the sunshine.

After all these pictures of alcohol…..let’s drop a gear and talk about my brother…

He’s been doing well in rehab. It’s officially 5 weeks, so next weekend he’ll be able to make phone-calls on Saturdays.

We’ve been regularly getting 2 letters a week. It’s been really interesting and encouraging to see his progress through his written word. For the first few weeks there was this desperation in his writing; constantly fretting and worrying about ‘things‘; minor things like wanting money for cigarettes, lollies & chocolate, postage stamps, etc. But over the last few weeks there has been clarity in his thoughts and a lot more honesty and a lot less fretting over ‘stuff’.

He’s in for a full 12 months, so it’s going to be a long, tough road, but for the first time I’m actually feeling confident that this just might work.

Anyway, I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend.
We’ve ordered Lebanese for dinner, which should be arriving any moment!
We’re going to eat baba gannouche, felafel, tabouli & fried cauliflower and watch Robert De Niro & John Travolta in ‘Killing Season’ on DVD.

Namaste my lovely peeps,

snuggling up to my buddy; Melly & Harley

whats black and furry and full of energy?

Harley of course!

I must admit he’s a little spoilt. To break up his loneliness when we’re doing long hours at work, his dog walker collects him for long dirty rumbles with his dog buddies in the park! They tweet their pictures during the day so I can see what my little monster gets up too. Here’s a few pics courtesy of @Happy_Pets_

Harley is the one in black.

And then here’s a few pictures I took where he doesn’t look like a filthy mongrel!!!
