roll out the red carpet….I’ve been nominated! | liebster blog award

liebsterblogawardOooooh how exciting to receive an award!

Carla Sue’s blog eat sweet is literally a smorgasbord of delicious treats.
I read her posts almost licking the computer screen!

She’s tagged me with some fun questions, so here goes…

1. Favourite flavour of icecream?

You don’t know what you’re asking of me to narrow it down to just one flavour…. I.Love.Icecream. It is my undoing. Classic strawberry, hokey pokey, Ben & Jerry’s Clusterfluff & Triple Caramel Chunk, boysenberry and coconut. I’m hungry.

2. Relaxing holiday, or fast-paced holiday?

Both for different reasons; I usually holiday by the beach; soaking up the sun, swimming in blue waters & drinking too many cocktails is just the ticket after working all year, but my planned holiday is centered around hiking in the wilderness with no technology! You need both I reckon.

3. Favourite brand of chocolate?

Haigh’s. No question about it.

4. Wind or rain?

Rain. Love a good thunderstorm. Don’t love getting my skirt blown around my ears from too much wind!

5. Favourite genre of music?

Oooh this is another tough one. I listen to so much different genres! Probably narrow it down to folk-type music though. You know; chilled, acoustic, story lyrics like Angus & Julia Stone, Ben Howard, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, FrouFrou, James Taylor, Tracy Chapman. But of course I also love hip-hop, RnB, Flamenco, Country, house & dance.

6. Sleep with one pillow, or two? (or three…or four)

Usually none. I like lying flat on my tummy.

7. Strawberries or raspberries?

I can’t choose! When they are both in the height of summer season, they are both just too divine to choose only one. Oh OK, raspberries.

8. Cats or dogs?

Dogs! And one in particular; my little Harley the damn cutest cavoodle in the world.

9. Favourite vegetable?

I would say green string beans or potatoes. I eat beans raw, blanched in salads, in stirfrys & as a side. Potatoes are the best boiled then roasted til crispy or mashed just like my brother makes them; with enough butter & full-cream milk to stop your heart!

10. Day or night?

Both depending what day or night it is! I love days full of sunshine, walks along the water and picnics in the park, or nights dining with friends under the stars. Plus I love a good long sleep in winter clean sheets & fluffy doonas.

11. Favourite hot drink?

I am a coffee girl through and through during the daylight hours but at night or on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I love a pot of peppermint tea.

♥♥♥

to new friends

Yesterday I met up with Michelle from Fun Fit 5K Plus who was visiting Sydney from Missouri, USA!

We’ve been following each other’s blogs for about 6 months and a couple of months ago she let me know she’d be in Sydney (for her sixth trip) visiting her twin sister who lives here and asked if we’d like to catch up!

We met at a cafe local to my work in the city and talked non-stop for an hour and a half (much to the amusement of her sister)! It was so lovely; meeting someone who you kind-of know through reading and seeing pictures of their everyday life, but to sit and chat IRL was really special and I felt so comfortable and like I was catching up with an old friend. We didn’t have enough time as I had to get back to work but it was so wonderful to meet her.

She bought me a gift of champers & some gourmet marshmallows and for Harley she bought the cutest stuffed squeaky toy, named “Justin Beaver”, and some treats.

And here is Harley, hard at play in the attempt to show ‘Justin Beaver’ the squeaky stuffed beaver some good old Aussie hospitality!

Much love to my new friend, from Melly & Harley!

right now

trophy shelf | sunshine award

Where Lilly over [here] solves problems (I usually create them!) and lives in Colorado while I live in Sydney, we both love beer (her a little more than me), food (me probably a little more than her), bubble baths with a glass of vino, taking pictures of our food, good books, Lisbeth Salander, the smell of clean laundry, exercise, cooking, love Germany & have the same middle name! She also has a thing for Mexican food, is named after a beautiful flower and did I mention she loves beer?!

Michelle from [here] is a twin! Which to non-twin people like me is the most fascinating thing. I love her blog which is about her love of her huge family, reading, baking, working-out, the Cardinals, her strong faith, beautiful words like poetry, loves Jillian Michaels the way I love Michelle Bridges, her adventures in Missouri & beyond, has a wonderful husband and has two adorable doggies named Cooper & Coogee. Her twin also lives Sydney so she gets to visit every so often!

Anyway, Lilly & Michelle recently tagged me for the Sunshine Award. You can check out Lilly’s post [here] and Michelle’s post [here] and now read all about mine. Happiness all around!

Rules:

If you are nominated you must include the link in a blog, linking to the person/blog that nominated you. You must answer some questions and nominate fellow bloggers and link their blogs in your post. Let the people you have nominated know that you have nominated them!

Here are the questions:

1. Who is your favorite philosopher?

Cogito ergo sum“. Descartes said it best when he said “I think therefore I am“.
I think all of us are philosophers of some kind as there are messages that make us question our surroundings, position & identity all time.
I think Dr Seuss was a brilliant modern philosopher…

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

Even though I didn’t pay much attention to Philosophy101 first year Uni, in terms of celebrated philosophers I enjoy the Ayn Rand‘s book Atlas Shrugged

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it’s yours.”

and how can I not mention Voltaire, the French philosopher and father of the French Revolution who created his nom-de-plume from an anagram of his surname and championed the separation of church & state in a time where it was total blasphemy to think such things!

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

Nietzsche also; one of the founding fathers of Existentialism. What is more important to the meaning of human existence than the individual discovering the meaning of life through one’s own authenticity. “What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end” Brilliance.

Last but not least, a modern day philosopher (and filmmaker and futurist) Jason Silva who we’re going to see speak at The Opera House this Sunday! He speaks about ‘philosophical implications of tinkering with our biology, merging with our technologies and overcoming our biological limitations’. Interesting & relevant stuff!

2. What is your favorite number?
10. I don’t know why this number is still my favourite. It was Dennis Rodman’s jersey number when he was at his all time best (playing for the Spurs) and he was my favourite basketball player during high-school, so the number has just stuck with me!

3. What is your favorite animal?
Whales, dolphins, sharks and dogs. I’ve swam with wild whales and dolphins, have an awesome dog and really want to swim with a great white one day (protected in a cage of course!).

4. What are your Facebook and Twitter?
I’m one of the many Melissa Williams on Facebook and my Twitter is @m3lly78

5. What is your favorite time of day?
Sunset.

6. What was your favorite vacation?
Stalemate between my honeymoon in the Whitsundays QLD and Paris/Germany.

7. What is your favorite physical activity?
Can I say sex? If that doesn’t count, then I’ll go with Boxing and BodyBalance!

8. What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Hmmmm, that’s a hard choice between coffee & sparkling mineral water.

9. What is your favorite flower?
ooooh, I have so many! Peonies, ranunculus, David Austin roses & hydrangeas.

10. What is your passion?
My husband, my blog, my piano (even though I’m having a little break), cooking & my dog!

The nominees who bring sunshine to my google reader on a regular basis:

another lovely blog

I have a new blog buddy! Super exciting!!!

Steph Konar, from [Simply Stephanie] was recently tagged as a lovely blogger and then was kind enough to on-tag moi

From reading Steph’s posts & twitter my impression is that she’s a total darling; cute, funny & joyful; a girl that loves animals (esp. her doggy Moo!), reading, fashion, cooking, travelling, working out & getting the most out of life. Basically a girl after my own heart!

As part of this lovely blog tagging, we must give up 7 random facts about ourselves. [Check out Steph’s 7 quirky, random facts here.] So get ready for it…here are mine…

  • I always sit in the back of the taxi and then chat the whole way with the driver. I’ve had some strange and sometimes enlightening conversations!
  • Offspring is MY FAVOURITE TV show. Ever. It’s a big call I know.
  • I don’t like people touching my face. And I don’t like my arms touching anything when I’m sleeping. Weird much?
  • I find myself almost laughing out loud when I’m working out hard. I like to think it’s endorphins and not that I’m completely crazy.
  • I cried at the season finale of Glee. Who cares about neanderthal Finn but what’s going to happen with Rachel and Kurt next year?
  • Sometimes I go into radio silence for a couple of days; no seeing anyone, no phone calls, email, facebook, twitter, blogging. I talk all day long at work and sometimes I just need some downtime from being conversational.
  • I’m starting another round of Michelle Bridges 12WBT next week – 12 weeks of super squeaky clean nutrition and intensive training. I’m super pumped and a little apprehensive!

So I’d like to pay it forward to some blogstars who I read & love:

  1. Isabella from [My Fit Station]. Her blog is a total source of fitness inspiration.
  2. Daisy from [No More Fat Kitty]. She’s a fellow Aussie from Brisvegas who’s on a health & fitness journey and I love her posts! see Daisy’s post reply [here]
  3. Tam who is my darling friend and chronicles her awesomeness as a mother / wife / student / social commentator on her blog [Princess Disease] . see Tam’s reply post here
  4. Cate, a fellow Sydneysider, from [Cate’s Kitchen Adventures] who creates delicious dishes, takes pretty photos and posts them along with the recipes and adorable stories. see Cate’s reply post here
  5. Deb, another Brisvegas goddess who writes the most gutwrenchingly honest musings via her blog [Debbish] see Deb’s reply post here
  6. Jordan from [Meet Me in Paradise] who I just discovered on the blogosphere. I’m jealous because she lives in NYC and has a killer tan! see Jordan’s reply post here
  7. Neen, who until today lived down the road from me, and who is my delightful gorgeous friend and writes about anything and everything on her blog [Random Musings of Neen].
To my seven beautiful bloggers, I hope you copy the pic above, post your 7 random facts and link back to me!

full throttle with shift60

Saturday I was up at the dawn’s crack to trek out to Bondi (and by trek I fully mean the 15 minutes it took to get there at that time of day; being 6am) to meet up with Andrew Reid aka Reidy for a 12WBT “SSS” Super Saturday Session.

Through his blog I entered a comp to train with the Bondi Lifeguard at his regular gym Shift60.

Lifeguard Reidy - pic from his blog (no, he doesnt really have 6 arms!)
Reidy smashing the Shift60 run! (photo source: Shift60.com.au)

The gym is run by two brothers (Nick & Damien) and the premise sounds fairly generic – interval training for 1 hour, but its actually anything but.

Damien is the personal trainer who talks the group, which is limited at around 16 give or take, through 60 minutes of fitness blasting! I did Full Throttle which is ‘circuit’ of treadmill running & super-sets of core, back/shoulders/arm and leg strength training.

This video explains it much better than I can!

And you can read about Reidy’s week 6 post which includes my Sat session with him!

Week 6, Halfway and Learning to Fly

And here is my results from the 60 minute session

I’ll leave you with this one last video which is pretty damn funny & shows the guys as being super larrikins as well as serious fitness experts.
