Desperately trying to stave off the rude & unholy flu, I almost cancelled my girly date with Mandy and the ladies from Belles & Bubbles in meeting up at a little hidden gem of a wine bar called Love, Tilly Devine in Darlinghurst on Wednesday night.
I love this bar. I can’t explain it any better than they themselves do on their website, so here is their intro;
“Without being pretentious about it, we want this to be a bar where people come to drink well rather than to just get drunk – a place to take a good friend, or a prospective lover.
It is also a place to come to enjoy wine.
We think wine should express the grapes from which it was made and the place
where those grapes were grown. That means it should taste like fruit and herbs and flowers and minerals – not oak or alcohol. Even more important is that it must have balance.
Lastly, the name. It’s a fairly direct reference to the former East Sydney heavyweight – brothel Madame and militia boss extraordinaire – Tilly Devine. Not that we necessarily advocate what she used to do. Instead, the name is more of a nod to the past and a salute to the neighbourhood that we call home.“
Mandy & I arrive an hour early and are well welcomed on entry by a lovely friendly waitress. She seats us upstairs with room for the other girls and gives us a little bowl of complimentary olives. Did I mention that I love this place?!
Their wine list is intense. Just under 300 wines by the glass and bottle. We want to try a French wine and we’re a little overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude of the list so we get a little help from the waitress in choosing the ‘Chignard, Fleurie, ‘Les Moriers’, Gamay, Beaujolais, France, 2009′ – Mandy and I share a bottle.
To quote them again “to eat well is to live well” and we do just that by ordering a couple of delectable items from their simple yet well-thought menu;
Our hour head-start flies past and we’re suddenly joined by Randa, Sandra & eventually Shuma. The music is a little loud a times which sometimes makes it hard to hear, but its not too much of a complaint. Conversation flows easily as does the wine and three hours later we’re heading out the door with promises that we’ll return!
