A long overdue Date Night with my husband started with a couple of fantastic cocktails at The Bentley in Surry Hills — an ultra dirty Ketel One vodka Martini for me and an Old Fashioned for Jay. Seriously one of the best martinis I’ve had yet!
Our choice of restaurant came from a deal through Cudo. I am seriously addicted to Cudo and LivingSocial which have had fantastic offers and have been great/cheap experiences so far!
Agavé Restaurante Mexicano is on Crown St Surry Hills. In a city that is flush with Americanized tex-mex Mexican food, Agavé bills itself as an authentic Mexican cuisine with “Mestizo gastronomic influence”. As we’re shown to our table for our 8.30pm booking, the place is packed and diners are loud, festive and obviously having a great time. There is a flurry of activity with the music pumping Mexican beats, waiters zipping around the floor, drinks being toasted and the smell of delicious food wafting out of semi-open kitchen.
While we’re deciding on our order, we start off with Guacamole which is freshly made with avocado, lime, tomato, onion, chilli and coriander, served with totopos. The corn-chips (totopos) are made onsite, rustic and delicious! We wash these down with a couple of Bohemias – the authentic Mexican beer.
For a starter we share Flautas de Pollo which consists of 2 chipotle chile chicken filled crispy corn tortillas, topped with guacamole and salsa. I didn’t know what to expect really; Jay saw “chicken” and ordered it. I saw that it didn’t have too much chilli and agreed. It was crispy and fresh out of the oven, topped with cheese and served with tomato salsa. Inside, the shredded chicken was tender & juicy.
We’re getting pretty full and I’m getting pretty tipsy. I never turn down a good tequila and Jay spies Patron Reposado on the list. We do a couple of shots with tomato chilli chasers.
Our mains arrive and even though it’s really good I am so full I can barely get through mine, so my wonderful hulking husband finishes it off!
Molcajetes; Fajita style seared chicken, rubbed with Mexican spice blend, served with guacamole, rice, feta, salsa and tortillas.
Jay has the Tacos Asados; apparently eaten in little corner stores all over Mexico – corn tortillas with beef strips, onion, guacamole and salsa.
Only because we’re talked into it by the waitress and I’m just going with the flow, we share dessert. It’s OK but nothing special. The Flan; baked custard Mexican style.
We leave very happy, very full, and for me, very tipsy!
It was a great night out!
